Riddle, Eh? is a free-to-play, real-world riddle and scavenger hunt game about Canadian history, exploration, community, and friendly competition.
These Official Game Rules are the global rules for Riddle, Eh? and apply to every game. You are asked to read and confirm these rules each time you join a game.
Specific rules, schedules, prize structures, and gameplay details may differ from region to region and from game to game. The details for an active game are posted with that game. Where an active game's posted details differ from these Official Game Rules, the posted details apply to that particular game.
By creating an account, joining a game, submitting an answer, or participating in Riddle, Eh?, players agree to follow these Official Game Rules.
The most important rule of Riddle, Eh? is simple:
Be Canadian.
Be polite. Be friendly. Be respectful. Be fair.
Players are expected to act in a positive and respectful manner toward other players, game coordinators, members of the public, business owners, staff, volunteers, public workers, and anyone else they may encounter while playing.
Riddle, Eh? is meant to be fun, welcoming, community-minded, and good-spirited. Harassment, intimidation, aggressive behaviour, cheating, abuse, threats, discrimination, vandalism, or deliberately disruptive conduct will not be tolerated.
Compete hard, solve fast, have fun, and be decent about it.
Riddle, Eh? is free to play.
Players are not required to pay any fee, purchase any product, enter any business, make any donation, buy any item, or provide anything of monetary value in order to participate, solve riddles, submit answers, or qualify for prizes.
No special tools, equipment, memberships, paid access, or subscriptions are required to play.
Each Riddle, Eh? game takes place within a specific game area.
The game area will be clearly communicated before players join an active game. For example, one game may take place in Edmonton while another may take place in Calgary or another participating community.
Players are responsible for reviewing the game area, game details, rules, schedule, and any local information before joining.
Some game areas may have different rules, prize structures, schedules, or coordinator instructions. Any rules or details specific to an active game will be posted with that game and will apply to that game.
During an active game, players receive riddles one at a time.
Each riddle is designed to point players toward a real-world physical location within the game area.
A question is provided along with each riddle. Once players correctly solve the riddle and determine the intended location, they use information available at that location to answer the question.
All answers are designed to be found from lawful public access areas.
Players should never need to enter private property, restricted areas, construction zones, private businesses, private establishments, unsafe areas, or any location where public access is not clearly permitted.
Riddles are released one at a time, in order.
The first riddle is released when the game starts.
Each following riddle is released the day after the current riddle is solved, at the same time of day as the game's start time. For example, if a game starts at 9:00 AM and the current riddle is solved on a Tuesday, the next riddle is released at 9:00 AM the following day. The game continues this way, one riddle at a time, until every required riddle has been released and the game is complete.
Because the next riddle depends on the current one being solved, the pace of a game can vary. Players are responsible for reading the active game details before joining so they understand how that game will run.
Some games include bonus riddles.
Bonus riddles are not announced in advance. Players will not be told whether a game contains bonus riddles, or when or where a bonus riddle will appear. A bonus riddle may be offered at any point during a game.
Bonus riddles follow the same public-access and safety rules as all other riddles, and may carry their own prizes. Any rules specific to a bonus riddle will be presented with that riddle.
Players submit their answers through the Riddle, Eh? application.
After submitting an answer, the application determines whether the answer is correct or incorrect.
If the answer is correct, the player receives credit for solving that riddle and question combination.
If the answer is incorrect, the player may continue attempting to solve the riddle unless the active game rules state otherwise.
Under the standard Riddle, Eh? gameplay, solve time is not required and does not affect a player's results.
A specific region or game may use a different ruleset. Where an active game's posted rules use solve time, it is measured from the time a riddle officially goes live to the time the player submits the correct answer, and that game's posted rules will explain how it is used — for example, for placement, rankings, or tie-breakers.
Only players with a verified Riddle, Eh? account may qualify for or collect prizes. Players without a verified account may still play, but cannot win or collect prizes.
A specific region or game may set additional eligibility conditions for its prizes, including how winners are determined. Any such conditions will be posted with that active game and will apply to that game.
To collect any prize, a winner must produce valid government-issued photo identification that matches the name on their Riddle, Eh? account.
This is a mandatory requirement. It applies to every prize, and is in addition to any other requirements imposed by law or by the prize sponsor.
A winner who cannot or will not produce identification matching the name on their account is not eligible to collect the prize, regardless of game results. Prizes that cannot be awarded for this reason may be forfeited, awarded to the next eligible player, or handled as stated in the active game's posted rules.
Additional conditions of eligibility, age requirements, residency requirements, tax obligations, deadlines for claiming, or sponsor terms may also apply, and will be posted with the applicable prize.
Players may only participate in one active game at a time.
If multiple games are running in different areas at the same time, such as Edmonton and Calgary, a player may only join one of those active games.
Once a game officially starts, a player's selected game is locked in. A player cannot leave one active game and switch to another active game after the game has started. A player may leave a game only while it is still in staging (not yet started).
Players should choose carefully before joining.
Leaderboards may show player names, solve status, rankings, solve times, and other game-related information.
Leaderboard information is intended to encourage friendly competition and transparency during gameplay.
Riddle, Eh? may adjust leaderboard displays, correct errors, investigate unusual activity, or temporarily hide rankings if needed to protect fairness, safety, or game integrity.
Game coordinators may provide prizes for categories such as most correct solves, fastest overall solve time, bonus riddles, or other posted prize categories.
Prize structures may vary by game area.
Prizes for each game will be posted through official game materials, the website, the application, or other official communication channels.
Riddle, Eh? reserves the right to make changes to prizes at any time, including adding, removing, substituting, or modifying prizes during the course of gameplay.
If the prize structure changes during the course of the game, players will be notified through the application, website, email, phone call, text message, or a combination of these methods.
Any prizes provided by sponsors will be clearly identified as sponsor-provided prizes, and the sponsor providing the prize will be clearly indicated. Sponsors do not control scoring, winner selection, answer validation, player data, or final results unless clearly stated in official game materials.
All prizes are subject to the verified-account and identification requirements in Prize Eligibility and Collecting Prizes above.
All riddles and answers are designed to be solved from lawful public access areas.
Players must never enter private property, restricted areas, construction zones, closed areas, fenced-off areas, employee-only areas, unsafe locations, private businesses, private establishments, or any location where public access is not clearly permitted.
No clue or answer requires a player to trespass, bypass barriers, ignore posted signs, enter a business, speak with staff, purchase anything, move objects, or access any non-public area.
If a location appears unsafe, closed, restricted, unclear, or not publicly accessible, players must leave the area and report the concern to Riddle, Eh? coordinators.
Players are responsible for obeying all laws, posted signs, traffic rules, site hours, weather advisories, public safety notices, and instructions from lawful authorities.
Players should not use the application, read clues, submit answers, or interact with their device while driving, cycling, crossing roads, or doing anything that requires their full attention.
Players must not deface, damage, move, alter, remove, climb on, open, disturb, block, mark, attach anything to, or otherwise interfere with any public property, private property, monument, plaque, sign, building, structure, landscaping, fixture, natural feature, or public space.
Riddle, Eh? does not require players to physically interact with, move, modify, or disturb anything in order to solve a clue or answer a question.
Players are expected to respect all public spaces, historical sites, memorials, parks, sidewalks, roads, buildings, and community areas.
Players must use Riddle, Eh? only as intended.
Any attempt to cheat, manipulate scoring, bypass location or account controls, exploit bugs, use automated tools, interfere with the website or application, attack the system, access another player's account, submit false information, create abusive duplicate accounts, circumvent security features, or use the software in an unintended way may result in immediate disqualification from the current game.
Riddle, Eh? may suspend or remove accounts that appear to be fraudulent, abusive, unsafe, or in violation of these rules.
Players are responsible for keeping their account credentials secure.
Players must not share accounts, sell accounts, impersonate other players, misuse another player's information, or attempt to interfere with another player's ability to participate.
Players must not use profane, hateful, sexually explicit, discriminatory, threatening, abusive, harassing, or otherwise inappropriate player names, nicknames, or public display names.
Players must not attempt to bypass profanity filters through special characters, alternate spelling, spacing, symbols, letter substitutions, abbreviations, or any other method that results in a name resembling or suggesting a profane, abusive, discriminatory, or inappropriate word, act, phrase, or thing.
Riddle, Eh? may rename, hide, suspend, or remove any player name that violates these rules or is otherwise unsuitable for public display.
Riddle, Eh? coordinators may clarify rules, correct errors, review answers, adjust prize categories, remove unsafe clues, cancel locations, pause gameplay, investigate suspicious activity, disqualify players, and make reasonable decisions necessary to protect fairness, safety, security, or the integrity of the game.
All decisions regarding scoring, eligibility, tie-breakers, disqualifications, prizes, rule enforcement, and winners are final.
These Official Game Rules may be updated at the discretion of Riddle, Eh? coordinators.
Riddle, Eh? will make reasonable efforts to inform all active players of material rule updates before those updates take effect.
Notice of updates may be provided through the Riddle, Eh? application, website notice, email, phone call, text message, or any combination of these methods, depending on the nature and importance of the update.
Continued participation in Riddle, Eh? after notice of an update confirms acceptance of the updated rules.
By creating an account, joining a game, submitting an answer, or participating in Riddle, Eh?, players confirm that they have read, understood, and agree to follow these Official Game Rules.
Players who do not agree with these rules should not participate.
